“Too many cooks spoil the broth” – or create a really funny experience that increasingly goes into the bizarre, after which one can only ask: “What the hell was that?”
Too Many Cooks by Adult Swim first appeared during a series of infomercials at 4 a.m. on American television before going viral on YouTube.
The video starts as a parody of well-known 80s family sitcoms called “Too Many Cooks”, where the intro introduces the actors smiling at the camera as they go about their daily lives. However, it is not a regular 30-second intro… but a full 11 minutes. 11 minutes, in which Too Many Cooks runs through all genres, from a sitcom, to a cooking show, a soap opera, an animated superhero series, to darker elements that escalate more and more.
The music becomes slightly distorted, increasingly familiar dark smiling faces can be seen in the background, before the sitcom intro morphs into a slasher film. Actors get caught left and right, yet their displayed names remain neatly in front of their bodies, even when they are on the run. And again, as a crowning conclusion to the list, the killer hosts a festive one-man dinner with people who are not present as guests.
The characters seem to be trapped in the intro, develop a disease called “Intronitis”, through which the theme song can even be heard – and eventually also attacks innocents.
The symptoms: a slowly swelling song, a display name of its own, and a frontal camera shot until the letters of the displays take over and eventually people are displayed as horizontal bars.
Too Many Cooks escalates in its absurdity and sensory overload to such an extent that viewers do not know whether to remain silent, laugh, or just turn it off.
It’s a fever dream. But one that stays in your memory and is revived at the latest with the first tones of the theme song.
