5 years ago, The Division was introduced at E3 – Here’s what has happened since then

Nevertheless, a year 3 should continue. Ubisoft presented a roadmap for this.

Patch 1.8.1 was released in April and primarily focused on loot distribution. Rewards were expected to be fairer and better overall.

Nevertheless, there has been a period of silence in recent weeks. It has become quiet, with info about Patch 1.8.2 pending. The calm before the storm? This week will likely see the 100th State of the Game. Details about the new update and the shields are expected.

Next week, E3 2018 finally starts, and we are excited to see what Ubisoft presents to us about The Division 2.

What to expect at E3 2018

As reference points, we can refer to the previous E3 presentations of The Division. We assume a first trailer at the Microsoft press conference, which will take place before the Ubisoft press conference. This is similar to how it went down at E3 2013.

Why at the Microsoft conference? This would fit with rumors suggesting that Microsoft once again has exclusive marketing rights to The Division 2. Whether this also applies to DLCs, we do not currently know.

The Microsoft press conference will take place next weekend, on 10th June at 10 PM, followed by Ubisoft on 11th June at 10 PM.

What will Ubisoft deliver at E3? Since The Division 2 is supposed to be released no later than 31st March 2019, we expect a detailed presentation by Ubisoft. Information about the setting, new gameplay, and a more precise release date are anticipated.

In the meantime, rumors about a potential sequel, namely The Division 2, began to circulate. We reported back then about possible AAA games that Ubisoft announced.

For Patch 1.7, Massive even enabled PTS for consoles; unfortunately, they did not receive patch updates and were limited to a certain number of players.

In August 2017, the update was released for all platforms and included global events, hidden gear sets, and popular commendations that allow unlocking points and patches. Gradually, the game approached what it is today. By that time, The Division was considered by many agents better than ever before.

However, even this update was not flawless. Problems with masks and leaderboards during the first global event dampened the mood.

The probably most popular update – Patch 1.8

1.8 had a similar scope to Patch 1.4, which overhauled the entire game.

Surprisingly, this patch, contrary to the announcement, included a map expansion: The West Side Piers. Here, players encountered a coalition of opposing factions. Included was the horde mode Resistance, Skirmish as a new team deathmatch mode, new global events, and new hidden gear sets.

Additionally, many more innovations were introduced including the optimization station. The Underground also received a refresh by improving the loot and incorporating Hunters as a surprising element.

This update was released in December 2017 and caused excitement. Players returned, and there was positive feedback from all directions.

Unfortunately, complaints continue to this day, especially on consoles, where there is a loud debate about the use of CronusMax, a tool that allows players to gain unwanted advantages in games.

The second year in The Division

After the announcement of the second year, disillusionment, partly frustration, spread. No story content or map expansions. Free updates with huge features such as events and loadouts. Enthusiasm was limited.

However, Update 1.6.1 was released, which exclusively focused on the “Quality of Life” of the game, such as loadouts.

Patch 1.7 with Global Events, commendations, and hidden gear sets

Once again, Massive called an ETF into being to collaboratively improve the update with the players. They received the opportunity to test Patch 1.7 and 1.8, including the announced events, which turned out to be global events.

The work that Massive put into Patch 1.4 should pay off; by the end of October, the update went live, and numerous players ventured back to Manhattan. Others had never left.

November: Continuing the program – Survival and Update 1.5

Now that The Division was mostly in a better state, they returned to the original plans. Survival was next. An interesting game mode with survival (wow) and battle royale elements.

This also introduced the new faction of Hunters, particularly strong opponents whose abilities should be on a similar level as those of the players.

In addition, Patch 1.5 was on the way and was supposed to go live before Christmas. This brought, among other balance changes, the named gear items.

PS4 players had to wait again. Patch 1.5 arrived late and additionally caused the classic delta errors. Ironically, these occurred on PC and Xbox One a week earlier.

Last Stand and Update 1.6 – Focus on PvP

Massive called once again an Elite Task Force for the upcoming Patch 1.6 to test and contribute feedback towards the completion of the update.

The update delivers the first PvP mode of The Division, Last Stand, and introduced new areas in the north of the Dark Zone. Additionally, exotic gear was introduced; a new raid, Signal Lost, was also brought into the game. First missions received the legendary difficulty level.

Also new: The premium vendor for cosmetic items and emotes was integrated as well.

Also new: The premium vendor for cosmetic items and emotes was integrated as well.

The Division in 2018 – Between year 3 and The Division 2

After months of speculation, Massive finally unveiled the truth on the 2nd birthday of The Division: The Division 2 is in development and will be presented at E3!

Nevertheless, a year 3 should continue. Ubisoft presented a roadmap for this.

The-Division-Roadmap

We are excited and look forward to the surprises!

We are excited and look forward to the surprises!

How do you find the retrospective? Are you looking forward to E3?

Also new: The premium vendor for cosmetic items and emotes was integrated as well.

We are excited and look forward to the surprises!

Nevertheless, a year 3 should continue. Ubisoft presented a roadmap for this.

The-Division-Roadmap

We are excited and look forward to the surprises!

How do you find the retrospective? Are you looking forward to E3?

Also new: The premium vendor for cosmetic items and emotes was integrated as well.

We are excited and look forward to the surprises!

Also new: The premium vendor for cosmetic items and emotes was integrated as well.

Patch 1.8.1 was released in April and primarily focused on loot distribution. Rewards were expected to be fairer and better overall.

Nevertheless, there has been a period of silence in recent weeks. It has become quiet, with info about Patch 1.8.2 pending. The calm before the storm? This week will likely see the 100th State of the Game. Details about the new update and the shields are expected.

Next week, E3 2018 finally starts, and we are excited to see what Ubisoft presents to us about The Division 2.

PS4 players had to wait again. Patch 1.5 arrived late and additionally caused the classic delta errors. Ironically, these occurred on PC and Xbox One a week earlier.

Massive called once again an Elite Task Force for the upcoming Patch 1.6 to test and contribute feedback towards the completion of the update.

How do you find the retrospective? Are you looking forward to E3?

The presentation of The Division 2 at E3 is imminent. In a few days it will happen. We look back on over 2 years of The Division and the rocky path that has led to The Division 2.

The Division 2 is at E3 2018 – this much we know since the 2nd birthday of the first part. Ubisoft will present the sequel at its own press conference. Microsoft may also showcase a trailer, just like at E3 2015.

We take this opportunity to take a look back at the past 2 years and summarize the remarkable story of The Division for you. Additionally, we speculate on what we will see at the upcoming E3.

Retrospective: June 2013: The reveal at E3

The Division was first presented at E3 2013. At that time, the amazing graphics and the interesting concept of an online RPG shooter came as a surprise. The release was planned for 2014, but Ubisoft postponed it first to 2015 and then again to 2016.

June 2015: Presentation of the Dark Zone at E3

Here the Dark Zone was introduced, the area that is particularly heavily contaminated in the center of Manhattan. This is the flagship of The Division and combines PvE and PvP content.

In the accompanying video, a 4-player team was seen again, searching for loot in the Dark Zone. They encounter another team and quickly turn rogue.

Spring 2016: Start of the Closed and Open Beta – Players can gather first impressions

What did the Closed Beta include? With the Closed Beta, a certain number of players who had to register beforehand could explore parts of Manhattan for the first time. This included character creation, a mission for the medical wing of the operations base, and 2 areas of the Dark Zone.

What were the contents of the Open Beta? In the Open Beta, another story mission was added; otherwise, it offered exactly the same content. But even then, there were problems with cheaters that were not going to disappear anytime soon.

With 6.4 million beta testers, Ubisoft already broke the first record.

Downgrade discussion and further issues even before release

With the gameplay from the Closed and Open Beta, there was an outcry. Apparently, the graphic quality was noticeably lower compared to the E3 trailers. However, this was not communicated by Massive. In addition, announced content was cut again, such as the playable drone or the trading system.

This led to a shitstorm, tons of comparison videos, and numerous discussions that obviously did not harm the release, as will be noted at launch.

Additionally, there was trouble over an exclusive deal that Ubisoft made with Microsoft. Content from the season pass was supposed to be released 30 days earlier for Xbox One and PC, while PS4 players would have to wait a month.

Already on 7th March, the servers started, although the official release took place on 8th March. Additionally, Ubisoft announced the plans for the first year of The Division.

The rocky release

The Division became Ubisoft’s most successful title at launch and broke several internal company records, despite all the problems and negative reports.

What problems did The Division face at launch? In addition to difficulties with redeeming pre-order bonuses and Uplay rewards, the performance and servers were criticized. First trolls could also wreak havoc. These blocked other players in their progress by blocking doors to safe houses.

The gameplay and atmosphere, however, were very well received by players.

Massive(-)problems – Hacks, cheats, and the backpack bug

One difficulty followed another; The Division had an endless streak of bad luck at launch.

Hackers and cheaters were practically invited to wreak havoc due to the structure of client and server-based data. Data that were not stored server-side could be manipulated quite easily by them . This is still partly noticeable today.

At times, it was even possible, due to the “multi-group glitch”, to have more players in missions than actually intended. The glitch could be fixed with a hotfix.

Even more serious was the backpack bug, which sometimes locked players out for weeks. The problem occurred due to switching mods, leading to a fatal error in the calculation of certain data. The result was: locked-out agents.

First free update with the new raid “Falcon Lost”

With Patch 1.1, The Division entered its next chapter in April 2016.

What did the first update bring? The first raid of the game, “Falcon Lost”, the first 4 gear sets (Nomad, Tactician, Striker, and Defender), including gear score and other new content. Crafting was significantly more difficult again. Named enemies would now drop high-end loot for sure.

Weekly ISAC missions, in which a small side story was told, also found their way into the game.

Unfortunately, another serious bug followed that made some players lose agents. The cause was probably the servers not calculating certain data correctly. The raid was also not spared and had numerous exploits.

Massive finally took a stand and promised improvements for the future.

May Update 1.2 – Dark Zone brackets and PvE content

At the end of May 2016, Patch 1.2 followed. Massive aimed to make loot more generous and improve PvE content. The biggest innovations were the second raid, “Clear Sky”, 4 more new gear sets (Predator, Hunter, Final Measure, and Lone Star), high-value targets and sealed containers.

In addition, some bugs were fixed. Unfortunately, another error occurred that temporarily made agents disappear.

The success of The Division has led to a movie being planned since then.

First expansion: Underground and Patch 1.3

At E3 in June 2016, the first DLC expansion, Underground, was presented. It was released for Xbox and PC at the end of June, while for the PS4, due to the exclusive deal, it came out only in August. In addition to the Underground, the third raid, Dragon’s Nest, was introduced into the game.

This is how the Underground was presented: Made up of various assets that are randomly generated and combined, the individual mission areas should feel unique each time, with no mission being the same.

This is how it looked in practice: Unfortunately, the number of these assets was far too low; moreover, many agents criticized that the rewards were not lucrative enough. Additionally, there were a very limited number of mission objectives.

Also, with Patch 1.3 at the beginning of July, new weapons like the G36 or the PP19 were introduced, and 4 new gear sets (AlphaBridge, DeadEye, Restorer, Banshee, and FireCrest) were included.

Even after this update, the problems and bugs did not take long to appear. Delta errors and long queues prevented many agents from logging in.

The great turnaround – Massive overhauls the entire game

In August, more than 5 months after release, the developers admitted: “It’s not fun!”. This point marks the first significant step toward improvement in The Division for many.

What exactly happened? First, they listed the major problems such as some bugs and “game-breaking” issues that were severely impacting the fun of the game at that time. Everything was falling apart at every corner, prompting Massive to consider a complete renovation necessary.

Therefore, they postponed all updates and survival to focus on these problems first.

Roadmap for solutions

Massive presented its plans to pull the game out of the mess and showed a roadmap.

This is what Massive’s emergency plan looked like: Update 1.4 was supposed to address most of the issues, but it could only come in October. In the meantime, they invited a selection of players, called Elite Task Force, to work with Massive to develop and test potential changes.

In addition, the PTS were introduced. These public test servers would go live before each significant patch from now on.

The most important changes in Patch 1.4 also included adjusting the balance of player and NPC strength. Virtually everything was overhauled. No area of The Division remained untouched.

What will Ubisoft deliver at E3? Since The Division 2 is supposed to be released no later than 31st March 2019, we expect a detailed presentation by Ubisoft. Information about the setting, new gameplay, and a more precise release date are anticipated.

We are excited and look forward to the surprises!

How do you find the retrospective? Are you looking forward to E3?

Unfortunately, complaints continue to this day, especially on consoles, where there is a loud debate about the use of CronusMax, a tool that allows players to gain unwanted advantages in games.
