Food serves more for sustenance than enjoyment
In 2077, the residents of Night City, who have immigrated from various parts of the world, try to preserve a part of their culture through food. Depending on which district you are in Night City, you will find various stalls and bars that offer a variety of different meals. However, the names of these dishes are just names. Because real
is less than the products.
The city is mostly fed by the corporation Biotechnica since around the middle of the century, most food sources simply collapsed. Contaminated soils and waters have ruined global agriculture, and the over-farming of monoculture has brought the entire ecosystem to a point of no return.
To still feed the people, artificial food in the form of dry feed (yes, like pet food) and the so-called SCOP (Single Cell Organic Proteins) has been resorted to, which can be adapted to any taste and preference.
In 2077, SCOP refers to all synthetic meat products grown from worms and insects on Biotechnica’s protein farms. But further vegetarian foods are produced from soy, algae, and lab-grown vegetables.
The majority of people, however, do not cook anyway, but buy pre-packaged foods and meals that can be quickly pulled from a vending machine for a quick hunger fix.
