Fontaine – Bioshock
The final boss of Bioshock is particularly memorable because it is a boss that has wandered into the wrong game. It frustratingly mismatches the rest and feels lazily slapped together.
This is especially annoying, as Fontaine is a very intriguing character and contributes significantly to the twist-filled storyline of Bioshock. The game is creatively rich from the start and surprises time and time again – only to end with a generically boring and narratively disappointing boss.
It would have probably been better to completely forgo a final battle. So, the impression remains that the developers, who otherwise play heavily with meta-layers, had no creative ideas left at this point. As good as Bioshock and its twist are, the banal final boss is probably not easily forgotten by players for the wrong reasons. Especially since the story is disappointingly quickly concluded afterward, and is far from as atmospheric as the great beginning.
