The Banished – The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
The Banished is a huge, black being that you must defeat three times throughout Skyward Sword. You find yourself in an arena where a wide path spirals upwards on the sides. The Banished must not reach the top and must be defeated first.
To do this, you must hit a weak point on its head three times. You do this by flying higher with the glide and then jumping onto the head of the monster. In theory. Too often, the jump fails because the surface of the Banished is very uneven, and Link tends to slide off.
If you’re able to land a hit, the Banished screams in pain and throws you off. This starts the game over again. Three times. Once the beast is defeated, it returns two more times throughout the game’s progression. With the exact same, boring mechanics that are only slightly modified. The Banished is not fun, extends playtime, and frustrates when physics don’t cooperate. Why Nintendo deemed this boss worthy of being recycled in such a manner is anyone’s guess.
