The soldier as a background is suitable for all players who enjoy wielding weapons with their character. And that’s quite a lot. With the soldier, you receive a rank and a name for this combat style, which in this case becomes a practiced martial art.
Soldiers know how to handle weapons very well and have already gained much experience in combat and warfare. Therefore, they receive perfect bonuses with possible ability score increases in Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution that promote the important attributes of a melee fighter.
Although the soldier is not as versatile as the traveler, they possess a talent that no weapon fighter wants to miss: the Wild Attacker.
With the talent, a trained weapon user can make particularly damage-dealing blows. Once per turn (!), when the character attacks with a weapon, the player can use two dice to determine the damage and then choose which of the two results to take. This can always be seen as an advantage for more damage, but in the case of an attack with non-fatal intentions, it can be used as a more controlled method.
Those who play Dungeons & Dragons to deal as much damage as possible cannot avoid the soldier. And we know that these players exist in large numbers.
