A Scanner Darkly (2006)
“A Scanner Darkly” is a science fiction film based on the dystopian novel “A Scanner Darkly” by Philip K. Dick.
The film is set in a dystopian surveillance state where drug use and addiction shape the lives of the people. Agent Fred, played by Keanu Reeves, is undercover investigating the manufacturers of the drug “Substance T”, which causes many problems and the downfall of all existences.
However, during his investigations, Agent Fred himself becomes a consumer of this drug, which begins to split his awareness of his own identity, causing him to completely lose touch with his own personality.
The film’s peculiar look was achieved through the art of rotoscoping, a technique in which artists trace over individual frames of real film scenes, frame by frame, to better realize realistic movements.
