Denathrius
There are few things from the Shadowlands expansion that have remained in positive memory for players. But one of those characters is Denathrius. The former lord of the shadowland Revendreth was defeated in Castle Nathria. However, he was not killed; instead, his living blade Remornia absorbed the essence of its master, saving him from total annihilation.
Afterwards, Remornia was kept safe and permanently illuminated by the Holy Light, making it impossible for Denathrius to escape – or so it was hoped.
However, Denathrius was not only active in the Shadowlands, as he is also the creator of the Dreadlords. He has infiltrated his servants into almost all cosmic powers, such as the Army of Light or the Burning Legion, although it is questionable how loyal these Dreadlords still are to him or whether they have been altered by the corresponding powers.
However, it is clear that Denathrius was rescued by the Dreadlords. Because before the end of the expansion, Denathrius was saved with his blade Remornia and is in an unknown location, where he is presumably brought back to life by his children.
Blizzard has mentioned that they were surprised by the positive feedback from the community regarding Denathrius and therefore built an “escape route” into the game afterwards, meaning that the danger from Denathrius is not entirely averted.
Denathrius has not made another appearance yet. However, as long as there are still Dreadlords, it is likely that their creator will one day reappear to look down on us with his arrogant, self-loving voice and a large portrait of himself in the bedroom, confidently telling us that we are worth nothing at all.
