In a message to the players, the Teamfight Tactics developers report what they have learned from the first set. We have summarized the 5 most important changes for Set 2.
What changes in Set 2? The TFT developers want to do some things differently in Set 2. In addition to more than 30 new champions and many new attributes, the overall direction of the game has also been discussed.
Unlike Set 1, unfair randomness or frustrating effects should be avoided. There will also be adjustments to the patch rhythm.
We have summarized the 5 most important innovations for you.
1. Changes to Randomness
What differences are there in randomness? According to the developers, there are two types of randomness:
- Controllable randomness – When one of two Imperials receives the buff.
- Bad randomness – When phantoms put an opponent at 100 health points.
The first set often relied on the bad type of randomness. The introduction of the four Hextech champions even worsened the situation. Accordingly, the developers reacted.
What changes in Set 2? Set 2 will rely only on controllable randomness. Therefore, phantoms and Hextech have been removed from the game. The changes to items in patch 9.18 should have already made randomness more controllable.
This has partially worked. While before patch 9.18 there was much discussion about items, these discussions have now almost disappeared.
2. Changes to CC
What changes to CC in Set 2? In the current set of Teamfight Tactics, there are many combos that rely heavily on crowd control, including:
- Ice creatures
- Gnar
- Kennen
- Leona.
Additionally, the demons that used to drain mana from opponents have incapacitated champions. Changes have already been made in Set 1 that reduced CC.
These adjustments should continue in the new Set 2. Notably, none of the new attributes have any effect related to CC.
3. Soft vs. Hard Counters
What is the difference between soft and hard counters? Hard counters completely negate a specific effect, while soft counters only significantly reduce it. The best example is the dragons:
- Previously, the dragons were 100% immune to magical damage.
- Today, incoming damage is only reduced by 75%.
The principle of soft counters will continue in Set 2. Therefore, universal content like void creatures with true damage or nobility with resistances against magical and physical damage will no longer exist.
4. Less frequent, but larger patches
What changes to the patch rhythm? While updates were released every week upon TFT’s release, this rhythm was significantly slowed down by the end of Set 1. The last patch 9.21 was even very small.
In Set 2, there could be “B-patches” again at release to fix major bugs: smaller updates that correct errors from the previous “big patch”.
After a short time, the rhythm should settle back to two weeks. Furthermore, not every of these updates will contain a significant change.
Currently, only 3 to 4 new major updates are planned. These will then introduce new champions, items, or other game expansions.
5. Major Overhaul of the Battlefield
What changes to the battlefield? The battlefield of Teamfight Tactics will be expanded by one row on each side with Set 2. Additionally, elemental fields will be introduced that bring various buffs.
Its position and effect are symmetrical, allowing both sides to benefit from them. These changes aim to make gameplay more exciting and keep combos flexible.
