3. Hui Buh: The Castle Ghost
Hui Buh was turned into a ghost because he cheated in a card game. He has lived in Castle Burgeck for 500 years because of this. But one day, new residents arrive in the form of Julius. He wants to marry in the castle and therefore wants to clear out all the junk and completely renovate the place.
This is a classic German family film with the well-known German sense of humor and slapstick. The highlight is mainly Michael Herbig, who brings the ghost Hui Buh to life. In combination with Christoph Maria Herbst, many funny scenes are created.
If you prefer something a bit more modern, you can now also refer to a sequel in the form of ‘Hui Buh und das Hexenschloss’ from 2022.
4. Coraline
A little warning in advance. Coraline is rated for ages 6 and up, but you should still be careful with the content of the film.
Coraline finds her life boring and is trapped in apparent drabness. One day she finds a door that hides a parallel world, which seems wonderful at first glance. Her parallel parents take loving care of her and give her the wanted attention. But slowly Coraline realizes that not everything is as beautiful as it seems.
The stop-motion style still looks fantastic due to the mix with computer animations.
Unlike the other movies on this list, this film goes deeper into fears and core themes like dreams. Accordingly, this film can also be disturbing or incomprehensible for 6-years-olds. Nevertheless, it is a worthwhile film.
