Alterac Valley – PvP with nearly endless duration
Nowadays, a battleground in World of Warcraft often lasts only a few minutes. Hardly any match takes more than half an hour.
That was different back then. Especially Alterac Valley had a reputation in Classic times for stretching over many hours or even days. And that was no exaggeration! Anyone who signed up for Alterac Valley on Wednesday after server maintenance could – given enough time – sometimes be stuck in a battle that never ended until the next Wednesday because the forces were evenly matched.
However, Alterac Valley back then was also largely a “quest area”. Some players completed PvE missions, such as collecting resources from the mines or grabbing ram pelts. By completing these missions, your faction received reinforcements, such as elite NPCs that joined the campaign.
The absolute highlight was the summoning of “Ivus the Forest Lord” or “Lokholar the Ice Lord”. These monsters were summoned by several players in the middle of the battlefield, roamed around for a few minutes before making their way to the enemy’s fortress and gaining strength along the way.
Although Alterac Valley rarely found a quick end, the experience was something heroic and was emblematic of the everlasting conflict between Horde and Alliance.
Moreover, it was a pretty cool experience when you left the battleground at 11:00 PM only to return to the same match the next day and even recognize some champions again.
On the last page, we talk about the nice calm that could finally settle in the WoW community…
