Switches that Replace Entire Rooms
Especially in the old “Tomb Raider” games, puzzles were the main activity. Almost always, you had to go into small rooms for various solutions, activate a lever or switch, and then return to the previous room to notice a small change – such as a newly opened passage, a toppled column, or another type of passage.
However, the early Tomb Raider games had a peculiar trick discovered later with the level editor.
Instead of changing a small detail by activating a lever in another room—like an open door—developers would simply replace the entire room. After pulling the lever, you would return to a completely different room, even if only a few minor details had changed. This trick was likely employed by developers to avoid animating moving objects, as CallmPanic402 remembers.
