Roguelikes

Roguelike is a genre that is particularly popular in the indie games area. However, individual elements are often adopted and combined with other genres, then referred to as a “Rogue-lite,” meaning a “weakened” version.
The characteristics of a “true” Roguelike are quite strict and include things like procedurally generated dungeons, permadeath, a turn-based combat system, and the possibility of different approaches. Roughly speaking, it’s mainly about playing through individual runs, with progress being reset each time. You can find out more about this in our genre overview on MeinMMO.
This concept was shaped by the game “Rogue: Exploring the Dungeons of Doom” from 1980. In fact, the genre is even a bit older. The first Roguelike is considered to be “Beneth Apple Manor,” which was released in 1978. However, Rogue became the first truly successful game, which is why the genre is now known as Roguelike, instead of Applelike.
