Captain Placeholder – The Ship Before Ships Existed
Captain Placeholder is actually more of a gag than a truly existing NPC, yet he remains a favorite among players, who have even ascribed their own stories to him.
During the beta, Captain Placeholder was an NPC found at various ports, such as Menethil.
There, he replaced the boat that connected the two continents until the boats were actually functional. With just two clicks, he simply teleported players across the continent.
Throughout the beta, players became so accustomed to Captain Placeholder that they were genuinely sad when this NPC was removed from the game.
The sadness even reached a point where some fans released their own songs about “Captain P.” The most prominent example we have for you here, even if it’s a bit outdated:
Surely you wouldn’t expect a cool story from such a “mechanic legend” like Captain Placeholder, but at least a small reference to him would be desirable. Maybe he has become a pirate himself or is captive among pirates and players can rescue him?
Many players would surely be happy about such an Easter egg.
