Many players from Destiny 2 are disappearing into the new shooter “Helldivers 2“, and although both games do not share the same genre, Bungie’s loot shooter could adopt some features from its competition to improve.
What is Helldivers 2? For all players who missed the boat: Helldivers 2 is a co-op shooter developed by Sony and Arrowhead Game Studios. You take on the role of a Helldiver. You receive various missions, must travel to diverse planets, uphold democracy, and crush bloodthirsty robots and insects.
The game does not take itself too seriously, so you can blow up your squad consisting of three other Helldivers if you’re not careful where you aim. There are orbital strikes or air support, but those can hit your friends as well. All of this creates a fun atmosphere that keeps players laughing.
Despite the genre differences, we compared both games and present you with three points that Destiny 2 should adopt to improve.
Helldivers 2 will soon provide you with mechs for the fight against the undemocratic monsters:
Immersion
What is meant by that? Destiny 2 tries to create a sense of immersion with its seasons, cutscenes, and missions, where you should feel that your actions drive the story forward – but that is not the case. Everything in Destiny 2 follows a tightly scripted program, regardless of how well or poorly you play. This is not only poison for immersion, it also feels artificial.
In Helldivers 2, on the other hand, players have all the reins in their hands. If you actively participate and help liberate planets, the combat on the battlefield also changes. Successful operations bring about positive changes in the world. However, if the Helldivers are too lazy and fail to meet their required values in defense and conquests, the map and the threat also change.
If Destiny 2 had a story that changed based on your actions or decisions, its immersion would be better.
Open communication from developers
Bungie communicates with the community, right? Exactly, they do. Every Thursday evening, there’s a huge post full of announcements and future plans that Bungie shares with its fans in the form of TWiDs (This Week in Destiny). And although Bungie “communicates” this way with its fans, it feels much more like a lonely monologue that players listen to.
Many Guardians have been addressing their problems, concerns, and wishes regarding Destiny 2 all over social media for years, and although the statements are clear, Bungie only responds very little or not at all. Rather, they tend to ignore these or address them far too late.
In Helldivers 2, on the other hand, even the head of the studio speaks up and is in constant communication with his community. If there are points that the team can address, they discuss and take action. Whether it was server capacities or the function to kick AFK players. The team behind Helldivers wants to create a game with the community where everyone feels comfortable, and that is what is missing in Destiny 2.
Humor
Where does Destiny 2 lack humor? Actually everywhere. Whether in the story or in the general Guardian daily life. There are simply no funny moments to brighten up the gray life in Destiny 2. Since Cayde died, humor has also suffered considerably in the loot shooter.
It is clear that Destiny 2 cannot adopt the same humor as Helldivers 2; that would be silly, but a few “silly moments” could occur more often.
It might be funny if team killing was active in some modes. That would not only be funny but also realistic – plus, Guardians can already self-revive anyway.
Destiny 2 is currently in a serious situation due to the witness and the fate surrounding light and darkness, but not everything in the loot shooter has to be serious.
Those were our points on the things Bungie could gladly adopt from Helldivers 2 to bring a little variety into the tired bones of Commander Zavala. What do you think of our idea? Do you agree, or do you think Destiny 2 is good as it is? Let us know in the comments!
