In The Elder Scrolls Online (PC, PS4 and Xbox One), many players have found great love or at least formed deep friendships. For Valentine’s Day, we present three particularly touching love and friendship stories.
When The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) officially reported 10,000,000 registered players at the end of 2017, the developers called on the community to submit their personal ESO stories. Among these “10 Million Stories” were some moving friendship and love stories.
We would like to share three of those stories here for Valentine’s Day, with the permission of the respective players.
The Story of Chris and Nikki
Chris and Nikki Mohr are both huge fans of the Elder Scrolls games. However, Nikki suffers from “Motion Sickness”. She quickly feels sick when playing in first-person view, which is why she could only play Elder Scrolls games like Oblivion or Skyrim for a short time.
But then ESO came with the convenient third-person view: Nikki was not only finally able to play as long as she wanted, but she could now spend time with her partner Chris in their favorite fantasy world!
A Couple in Real Life and in the Game
Since 2009, the two have been married, and since you can also get married before the altar of Mara in ESO, their two Khajiit heroes have also exchanged vows in the game. For Chris and Nikki, ESO is the perfect place to leave everyday worries behind.
Tamriel is the Ideal Place for After-Work Relaxation
No matter if it’s stress at university, at work, or while paying bills: After a few hours of wandering through Tamriel, real life looks a lot brighter for the two.
The two are not even focused on hardcore endgame content. They simply enjoy immersing themselves in the vibrant world of Tamriel, clearing a few dungeons, completing a handful of assassination contracts for the Dark Brotherhood, or just checking out the latest offers in the cash shop.
The Story of Shelly
A particularly touching story of friendship comes from Shelly in England. One day, she was out with her Khajiit hero in a public dungeon and encountered a particularly nasty boss. Since she couldn’t handle it alone, she set her status to “Looking for Group”. At that time, there was no text chat on Xbox.
Quickly, she found a noble high elf who assisted her against the monster. Together, they managed to defeat the beast and left the dungeon. On the surface, Shelly expected the group to dissolve and go their separate ways. However, that was not the case. No one wanted to dissolve the group, and both stood hesitantly in front of the dungeon for a while.
“I can’t hear you, please message me”
Shelly activated the voice chat and thanked her teammate. But there was no reply. Then suddenly a message appeared via Xbox Live Messenger: “I’m deaf and cannot hear you. Please message me here.”
Shelly immediately did so, and from then on the two were a solid team. They spent the rest of the day hunting lore books and sky shards together, happily chatting via mobile app.
A Dream Team
Since the two were having so much fun together, they started playing more often. They even got married in the game at the altar of Mara. On their honeymoon in the dungeon “Vile Manse”, Shelly noticed that her partner, due to his deafness, was missing all the cool details in the game.
In the dungeon, there was indeed a point where one could eavesdrop on conversations with Daedra lords. At that time, these texts were only audible, with no subtitles available. Shelly’s friend had always run past them and had never experienced this great piece of story.
From then on, Shelly made extra efforts to send her partner a text message whenever there were any audio-only texts in the game.
Still Best Friends
Shelly and her friend now also know each other in real life. They are “only” very good friends, but they will likely feel connected for a lifetime. And it all started with a tough boss in a dungeon in ESO…
The Story of Great Love
Unfortunately, we didn’t receive a name or picture from the player behind this story, but the tale is still incredibly touching. The player is an autistic trans woman from Germany, who finds it very hard to date in real life.
Therefore, she was mainly online and in games. On the internet, she met another player from England. The two got along well, and they even became a couple.
“Will you step before the Mara altar with me?”
At some point, the German player persuaded her friend to start playing ESO as well. When her beloved finally had an account and logged in, she surprised her with a Mara amulet, which is the wedding item in ESO that allows players to get married.
The two got married in the game that same day and have been inseparable ever since. Their relationship is now so close that the English player is moving to Germany to be with her partner. They plan to get married in real life as well on April 4, 2018, the anniversary of ESO.
