A car brand asked young people about their household activities. According to the survey, many do not feel confident changing a light bulb themselves, which results in high costs.

Where do the data come from? The car brand Halfords conducted a study in the UK, asking young people about basic household tasks. They surveyed both Gen Z individuals (aged 18 to 27), so-called Millennials (aged 28 to 43), as well as Gen X and Baby Boomers. Researchers for Halfords interviewed 2,000 adults to verify their independence.
Among others, TheTimes.com (Paywall) reports this. Here, 21% of the younger respondents (aged 18 to 43) stated that they do not dare to undertake tasks like changing a light bulb themselves.
Fear and Concerns About the Dangers of the Light Bulb
What reasons are there against changing it? Some reasons are mentioned by the respondents as to why they do not want to change the light bulb themselves:
- Almost a quarter of the respondents stated that the light bulb is too hot to change.
- Two-thirds stated that they do not want to deal with electrical problems.
- 21% of respondents consider it too dangerous to climb a ladder and change the bulb themselves. This applies to both Gen Z and Millennials.
However, there are further interesting data mentioned in the survey. Again, this concerns independence in everyday life:
- 11% of respondents prefer to call a professional when they want to hang a picture on the wall.
- 22% of Generation Z would ask their parents to change the bulb. However, Millennials are not really “better” in this regard: still 19% of the participants in this category.
- 30% cannot identify a flathead screwdriver.
- 44% of them turn to professionals when it comes to tasks like inflating their car tires or changing the wiper blades.
The Spanish magazine 3Djuegos.com sarcastically points out that all of these tasks can be done by oneself in a few minutes, which would save a lot of money. Because instead of doing the tasks themselves, many young people prefer to hire a professional to take over these tasks: According to Halfords, they spend about 1,500 euros a year on such tasks.
How does it look in other generations? Here, many people still take on the tasks themselves: For Generation X, the expenditures are at £386 (about €450), for Boomers at £253 (about €300).
There are also differences in the purchase and consumption of certain goods. This is also evident in the direct comparison of the generations. We present you with things that are daily used or bought by “Boomers,” which play hardly any role for Generation Z: 6 things Boomers spend money on every year that Gen Z would not do today
