When “Darkcrusian09” asked as an 18-year-old German on Reddit in February 2015 whether he should continue studying or become a full-time streamer on Twitch, today we know whether his decision was right.
This was the question back then: On February 18, 2015, “Darkcrusian09” asked in the Reddit forum of Twitch in an English he immediately apologized for:
He had been a professional streamer on Twitch for a year and had over 1,000 viewers every night. He could now spend more time streaming and grow bigger. But he was also studying:
Right now, I could start living off of Twitch, but what happens when the Twitch hype is over in a few years?
He asked on Reddit: What people advised him. Should he start Twitch as a job or not?
Other young gamers also had to decide early between school and a streaming career:
Finish school
These were the answers: The responses in 2015 were quite divided:
The comment with the most upvotes, three, said: “Finish school and stream in your free time.”
Other comments also advised caution: “I don’t know if it’s the right decision to quit school.”
A third one said: “While I wouldn’t want to discourage anyone from their dreams and life goals, I would also never advise someone to drop out of school.”
18-Year-Old Drops Out of School and Becomes Multi-Millionaire
How did it go then? The 18-year-old who asked back then dropped out of his mechanical engineering studies after just one semester, continued to live with his mother – rent-free for half a year – and tried to fully commit to streaming.
Today, the then 18-year-old is a multi-millionaire and known as Kevin “Papaplatte” Teller, Germany’s biggest streamer.
He reflects on the Reddit post from back then in a current video (via YouTube). He explains that he only relied on his mother for six months.
I wasn’t sure back then if this would all work. But it worked.
He says that back then, he was already very advanced with 1,000 viewers a day. It wasn’t that he was trying to be successful with Twitch; it was about whether he should continue to build on his career. Papaplatte is eliminated from the game in a Pro7 show because he thinks the Brandenburg Gate is 165 m high
