Mistake 4: Only keeping rare items because they are yellow and shiny
The higher the rarity, the better the item, one might think, but this is not the case in Path of Exile. If you watch streamers at the start of a league, you will notice that many gladly exchange yellow equipment for blue ones – because they are often better.
The reason: When you level up, you get the chance to acquire better items in terms of level, defense values, and perks. So it is counterproductive to cling to your yellow hammer that you received from Act 1 when you can get a blue one with twice as high values in “Physical Damage” and “Crit Chance.”
So don’t get too attached to your equipment and feel free to switch it up. However, you shouldn’t ignore yellow items either. If they do not fit your build, you can sell them for high gold sums to your trusted vendor.
Mistake 5: Not valuing decisions and rewards
Yes, in an ARPG everyone just wants a lot of loot and to turn everything into firewood. Reading is a secondary concern, but if you are not careful, you can quickly choose the wrong quest reward and ruin your league start.
The best example is the Karui tattoos you receive in Act 4. In the Hall of the Dead, you get 3 specimens that give you either a permanent boost to your stats (Int/Dex/Str) or resistances (Fire/Lightning/Cold). The emphasis is on permanent, because once you decide, there is no going back.
I even took 30 minutes to decide because I wanted to be sure about what I need for endgame. Many other users on Reddit, however, were different. They clicked wildly and chose something they now regret. So take your time and choose what you really need.
PS: Stats are more important, resistances do not matter in endgame with the right equipment.
Mistake 6: Sticking to meta-classes
Streamers and experts are very handy when it comes to learning different classes and mechanics, but what they can do better is badmouth various classes that aren’t actually bad.
With the launch of a new league, the meta gets wildly shaken up, and in the case of “The Third Edict,” all streamers talked about how bad the warrior was. No matter what you hear, don’t be discouraged and play what you enjoy.
You can build any class to reach the endgame and beyond in every league. Don’t let anyone discourage you.
