Icewind Dale
If true old-school gems do not scare you away, you will find true treasures in the following games. Above all, Icewind Dale offers a classic adventure in the DnD universe.
As the name suggests, you will be transported here to the icy tundra of Icewind Dale. Here you face a threat that is planning destruction deep beneath the glaciers of Faerûn.
For a small fee, you can get an exciting adventure in the Forgotten Realms for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Steam, Xbox One, and even for Android and iOS devices.
Shadowrun Trilogy
Not quite the typical DnD experience, but still resonating in a similar vein, the Shadowrun Trilogy offers three adventures in the urban fantasy genre with the titles Shadowrun Returns, Shadowrun: Dragonfall, and Shadowrun: Hong Kong.
With a fresh mix of fantasy and technology, you engage in pen-and-paper-like campaigns in the future, where elves, orcs, and dwarves try to assert themselves against ruthless and corrupt corporations and engage in tactical battles with their guns and pistols.
The trilogy boasts a strong old-school flavor and is based on the corresponding pen-and-paper rule set. You can play the whole series on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Steam, and Xbox One.
Neverwinter Nights
You can get this old-school treasure for just a few euros and sink over 100 hours of gameplay into it, if the style doesn’t seem too outdated for you nowadays.
Here, too, you find a classic DnD adventure set around the famous city of Neverwinter and its surroundings. In the center of various intrigues, lies, betrayals, and a touch of dark magic, you will constantly be faced with a moral dilemma.
Just like Icewind Dale and Planescape, you can play Neverwinter Nights on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Steam, Xbox One, as well as on Android and iOS devices.
Planescape: Torment
If Icewind Dale convinced you, you should also take a closer look at Planescape: Torment. Because both titles are often sold together at a good price and offer a similar experience.
Unlike Icewind Dale, this title does not take place in the Forgotten Realms, but offers a darker adventure from another corner of the DnD multiverse – namely in Sigil, the City of Doors. You play as the Nameless One, who cannot remember his countless past lives. However, his old lives seem to haunt him persistently.
The game offers enormous player freedom with various ways to solve situations and also gives you the opportunity to be truly wicked. However, one should not be lazy in reading, as the game overwhelms you with plenty of reading material.
Planescape: Torment is also available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Steam, Xbox One, and Android and iOS devices.
If you are more in the mood for an MMORPG in the DnD universe, you can dive into “Neverwinter”. The MMO recently received its 30th expansion and offers a classic Dungeons & Dragons setting combined with MMO feeling: MMORPG in the Universe of Dungeons & Dragons receives its 30th expansion on Steam and PS5
