Rank 2: The Thing
The monster from “The Thing from Another World” has an incredibly dangerous ability: It can take on the form of its victim. In other words: The monster can appear in an entirely harmless form, like a best friend, co-worker, parent… You wouldn’t notice it and then be killed from behind and used as a host.
While the transformation is not always perfect, the knowledge that anyone in the room can be the monster is very unsettling. In the movie, the team dealing with the Antarctica expedition has to face this problem. Additionally, the humans are isolated in a station, and outside only the cold awaits. The insidious part of “The Thing” is that you seldom know you are facing it – until death comes.
