Lex Luthor
- Defeated Superman in: “Batman: The Last Knight on Earth” (2019)
Lex Luthor is probably the most famous and regular opponent of Superman. Although he, unlike other antagonists such as Doomsday or Darkseid, does not possess supernatural powers, he has managed to defeat Superman several times.
A particularly impressive example comes from “Batman: The Last Knight on Earth” by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo. In this story, Luthor doesn’t even have to lay a hand on Superman to bring him down. Instead, there is a kind of vote where humanity decides whether good or evil shall prevail.
For this, both Superman and Luthor must give convincing speeches. The hero’s brilliant speech is so good that his opponent is convinced by the good side. Nevertheless, in the end, the people choose evil, which leads to spikes shooting out of the ground and brutally impaling Superman. Indirectly, Lex Luthor is responsible for the superhero’s death, as he had the idea for the debate.
